Human Rights Lawyers criticize FIFA for selection of Saudi Arabia
FIFA was urged on Wednesday by international lawyers (including Stefan WEHRENBERG) to abide by its own policies and review the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia before selecting the kingdom to host the 2034 Men’s World Cup.
A 22-page document was delivered to FIFA headquarters in Zurich on behalf of Mark Pieth and Stefan Wehrenberg from Switzerland and British lawyer Rodney Dixon. They offered to work with FIFA on an action plan and the monitoring of Saudi Arabia by independent experts.
In their paper, they call on FIFA to use its influence on Saudi Arabia to comply with the international human rights standards that football’s world governing body has required of tournament organizers since 2017.
