Human rights at stake at the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia
In May 2024, Prof. Mark Pieth (Basel Institute on Governance), lawyer Stefan Wehrenberg (Zurich), and barrister Rodney Dixon KC (London/The Hague) submitted a report to FIFA expressing clear concerns about Saudi Arabia’s bid for the 2034 World Cup.
When FIFA failed to respond, the experts publicly called for greater transparency, minimum human rights standards, and the involvement of independent experts in Zurich in October 2024.
Despite massive criticism, FIFA awarded the tournament to Saudi Arabia on December 11, 2024, without any relevant human rights guarantees. Since then, no measures have been taken to address the known human rights violations in the country.
The experts filed an official complaint with FIFA in May 2025, demanding that the organization comply with its own human rights guidelines.
